HMRC have provided an apology and explanation around the issue recently of some incorrect penalty notices. The message from HMRC states:

Some of you will have seen press coverage recently about Self Assessment (SA) daily penalty notices being sent out in error. We are very sorry about this but here’s an update on the situation which we hope will help you to deal with questions from your members or your clients.

19.04.2012 Government’s attempts to reduce regulatory burden on businesses

This year could be a “make or break” year for new deregulatory measures planned by the Government. These aim to reduce the burden of regulation facing businesses and boost employment by lowering the burden of complying with employment law. Clive Lewis, ICAEW’s Head of Enterprise, explains:

“Reducing regulatory burdens is a work in progress. Following a review in early 2011 of the UK’s regulatory framework with final proposals published alongside the Autumn Statement, the Government has achieved a cumulative net reduction of regulation worth £3.3 billion to business. The new measures will undoubtedly contribute further to this.”
